Some small business owners are choosing to save money and in some cases save their businesses by moving their offices home, according to this article in the Dallas Morning News.
“We’re seeing probably twice as many businesses doing that compared to a year ago,” says George Cloutier, founder and chief executive officer of American Management Services, an Orlando, Fla.-based consultant to small businesses.
The article discusses the unique difficulties a small business owner may encounter moving their business to their home, including business image, zoning and tax issues, employee perceptions, moving costs and the distractions that must be managed when working within your home and family environment.

We decided to KEEP our business at home and just go to local trade shows. The rent, utilities and such were just so high for a small business like ours, that we could not see spending $1000 a month for a brick and mortar location. It was enticing, but I can have a “store” on eBay, Bonanzle, Facebook, Twitter, Etsy, eCrater, etc… all at one time and for WAY, WAY less than having a real shop. Plus, those online locations are “open” 24 hours a day! and International buyers can shop there, too, without leaving the comfort of their home or continent. Rural business owners have to think outside the box!
Thanks, Karen. You have just given me a refreshing idea.
Great move, Nee Nee’s Soap Shop! I agree that today’s economic situation, compel us to think up of alternative ways for our business to survive, especially small ones. The internet is a powerful money-saving tool for promoting our businesses. And very effective too.
